Kälber sind die „Abfallprodukte“ in der Milchindustrie. Eine Milchkuh kann nur ständig Milch produzieren, wenn sie regelmäßig befruchtet wird und Kälber gebärt. Für viele dieser „überschüssigen“ Kälber gibt es in Österreich keinen Bedarf. Deshalb werden jährlich ungefähr 80.000 Kälber nach Italien, Spanien oder noch weiter, oft unversorgt transportiert. Vielleicht sollten Vegetarier überlegen, nicht doch auch Kalbfleisch zu essen?
Österreich exportiert jährlich zirka 120.000 Rinder, 30.000 Schweine, 10.000 Hühner, 10.000 Puten, 15.000 Schafe und Ziegen und 2.000 Pferde.
